Google Search Liaison Announces Retirement of Cache Feature and Potential Integration with Internet Archive

Google Search Liaison commented on Twitter on the removal of the cache link - one of Google's oldest features, which was initially designed to help users access pages during times of unreliable page loading. However, due to improvements in technology, this feature is being retired. There's hope to integrate links to the Internet Archive in the "About This Result" section to support information literacy and allow users to see how a page has changed over time, although this is still under discussion and not guaranteed.

Note from the OSINT Jobs Team: While we often recommend using the Wayback Machine to access older versions of websites, don't forget to check out Bing as well. Bing continues to offer cached versions of websites, providing an alternative way to view historical data. For instance, you can find cached versions of both osint-jobs.com and the OSINT Curious Project on Bing

Examples of cached websites: osint-jobs.com and osintcurio.us

Introducing NearbyWiki: Explore Wikipedia by Location

Ben Strick shared a tool on LinkedIn named NearbyWiki, which enables searching Wikipedia by location. This feature helps find entries related to specific areas, offering a novel way to access Wikipedia's vast information pool. This functionality is particularly useful for those needing detailed insights about different locations, enhancing research and exploration efforts.

Note from the OSINT Jobs Team: This tool was developed by a German-based company, called Hello World Digital, according to its Privacy Policy. Its mission is to “develop digital tools and provide helpful information for your everyday life.”

For a tutorial on how to investigate Wikipedia, we recommend this tutorial by the Stanford Internet Observatory: https://cyber.fsi.stanford.edu/io/news/wikipedia-part-two (mentioned in The Weekly OSINT Newsletter by OSINT Jobs, Issue 30 on 26 June 2022)
