Weekly insights from the web, handpicked and honed by experts.

A New Research and Reference Tool - Launching the Open Source Munitions Portal

The Open Source Munitions Portal (OSMP), unveiled at King’s College, London on November 23rd, 2023, is a new and critical resource for those researching munitions in conflict areas. The OSMP features a comprehensive library of hundreds of verified images of explosive munitions, each detailed with categories, visual tags, and documentation context. It must be noted the verified images are mostly from the Ukraine war. The launch of the OSMP, including panel discussion, can be viewed here.

The portal's resources page offers visual and written guides on key munition types and a full glossary of terms. Additionally, a visual questionnaire on the classify page aids users in categorizing munitions. However, all identifications are tentative due to the evolving nature of munition development and deployment. Users are cautioned against approaching munition remnants, as the portal's images, mainly sourced from social media under fair use, are from active conflict zones and may pose dangers.

OSINT At Home Tutorial: Mastering Area Calculation with Google Earth and Sentinel Hub

In the newest addition to the OSINT At Home series (part 22), Ben provides a comprehensive tutorial on using Google Earth and Sentinel Hub for accurately measuring areas using free satellite imagery. This practical guide is essential for anyone involved in research, investigations, geospatial studies, or even personal projects like house building, planning outdoor activities, or observing community changes from space. By the end of this tutorial, users will be able to leverage these tools for diverse applications, from obtaining precise area measurements to analyzing satellite imagery for varied needs.
